ATLANTA — A gas leak forced the evacuation of a west Atlanta middle school on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Atlanta Police Department Public Affairs Officer Anthony W. Grant confirmed officers were assisting with an evacuation at the address of KIPP WAYS Academy, a public charter school off Joseph E. Boone Boulevard in Atlanta.
The fire department's hazmat team did not discover any signs or readings of a gas leak, officials said.
"Air quality monitoring reported no gas or chemical readings throughout the entire school," Atlanta Fire Sgt. Stafford said. "A number of students were evaluated for concerns of possible respiratory distress and all were checked out by paramedics and released back to school officials or parents."
Children were let back into the lower level of the school after a third and final check of the building for air quality, Stafford said.
School was dismissed early.
