CONYERS, Ga. — A Conyers officer has been taken to an area hospital with serious injuries after crashing while attempting to cross an intersection with his lights activated.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Conyers police vehicle driven by Officer Earrett Green was crossing through a red light at the intersection of Ga. 138 and Flat Shoals Road when the crash happened.

The preliminary investigation suggested that the patrol vehicle "failed to use due regard" while traveling through the intersection. A 2013 Ford F-250 was heading south on Ga. 138 and was approaching a green traffic signal at the time.

Officer Green allegedly failed to clear the intersection before crossing the lanes of travel. As a result, the front of the F-250 hit the front passenger side of the patrol car. After the impact, the patrol vehicle rotated and struck a 2000 Mazda Protege.

The driver of the truck was taken to Piedmont Rockdale with minor injuries and the driver of the third vehicle that was hit sustained none. However, the GSP report said Officer Green was taken to Atlanta Medical Center with "serious injuries to his lower extremities."

A GSP spokesperson directed questions about the specific call the officer was responding to back to Conyers Police. Due to the nature of the injuries in the crash, troopers with one of the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) responded to the scene to handle the investigation. The full incident reports are not yet complete and the investigation is still ongoing.
