Police: Woman killed after stolen car runs red light and crashes into her vehicle

The stolen car sped away from a patrol car moments before the crash, police said.

ATLANTA — A woman was killed after a stolen car sped away from a police patrol car, ran a red light and crashed into her vehicle Tuesday morning, according to the authorities.

It happened around 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. and Donald L. Hollowell Parkway.

According to Atlanta Police, a patrol officer spotted an orange Dodge Charger in the area that he believed it was stolen out of DeKalb County. After the Charger passed him, the officer made a u-turn in his patrol car to get behind the car in order to check the licence plate.

APD said the Charger turned out to be the stolen vehicle.Authorities said the driver saw the marked patrol car pull up behind him and then sped away.

The Georgia State Patrol said the stolen Dodge Charger ran the light at that intersection and struck a Toyota Corolla.

The woman inside the Toyota was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the GSP. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as 55-year-old Trevania Allen.

APD said the driver and the passenger ran from the scene and are still at large.

APD conducted an investigation to determine if the officer chased the vehicle   prior to the crash.

"Our initial investigation has found no video evidence, nor received any witness statements, that the officer was involved in a chase of the Dodge Charger, or had activated the blue lights or siren on his patrol car to indicate he was attempting to pursue the vehicle," said APD Public Affairs Unit Director Carlos Campos. "The incident remains under investigation by APD’s Office of Professional Standards."
