Hundreds March for Genarlow Wilson

As many as 1500 people turned out Saturday in Douglas County to show their support for Genarlow Wilson. They gathered for a march and rally organized by the NAACP just days before a critical hearing before the Georgia Supreme Court on Friday.

A thunderstorm moved in as the march was about to begin, but no one ran for cover.

In fact, the crowd continued to grow.

"This is a test of our resolve," said Edward Dubose, president of the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP. "It's time to show the people that whether it rains or snows, regardless of the weather, it's about justice."

Wilson's mother said he remains optimistic that he could home soon.

"I spoke to him on Thursday, and his spirits were lifted higher because of the prayers," said Juanessa Bennett, Wilson's mother. "It's due to god." Wilson is serving a mandatory 10-year prison sentence.

He was convicted of aggravated child molestation two years ago for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.

Rae Gordon of Douglas County brought her 18-year-old son to the march to teach him a lesson.

"What you do as a young person, there are total consequences to your actions," said Gordon. In Wilson's case, his supporters believe the consequences were too extreme. They are hoping the state's highest court agrees.

On Friday, the Georgia Supreme Court will consider an appeal from the State Attorney General, who said a lower court went too far last month by ordering Wilson's release.

He was convicted of a crime that has since been reduced to a misdemeanor by state lawmakers.
