Commuter Dude | Frustrations continue at Buckhead intersection

Buckhead commuters are, once again, complaining about about an intersection where some drivers get an advantage others don’t enjoy.

ATLANTA – Buckhead commuters are, once again, complaining about about an intersection where some drivers get an advantage others don’t enjoy.

Jennifer Sumner’s trip home includes a left turn from Peachtree Road onto Pharr Road.

“We're getting shortchanged,” says Sumner.

Southbound traffic on Peachtree gets a left turn arrow at Pharr. Drivers on Pharr get an arrow to help them turn onto Peachtree.

It's the northbound drivers who are denied a left turn arrow, and that’s what frustrates Jennifer Sumner and her neighbors.

“We’ve had several conversations about how we have to get around this intersection,” says Sumner.

Pharr is one of many intersections along Peachtree where drivers lack a designated left turn lane. Without that arrow to give them a break in rush hour traffic, Jennifer and other northbound drivers are on their own.

We first heard complaints about the intersection months ago. The Georgia Department of Transportation will no longer add left turn arrows where there is no designated left turn lane.

There is a plan, however, to add a center left turn lane to a large section of Peachtree. GDOT is currently working on a design that should be complete by summer. At that time, we’ll know if Peachtree and Pharr will get that added left turn arrow.

“There's a lot of road rage at this intersection,” says Sumner.

Jennifer Sumner and others are eager to know.
