NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Covington man was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty on Wednesday to strangling his 19-years-old girlfriend more than two years ago.

Elijah Ramoutar was 19 when Newton County deputies arrested him for the murder of his girlfriend Alyssa Wright.

On Dec. 6, 2016, Newton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence after one of Ramoutar's relatives called 911. Police said he had contacted a family member and stated that he had killed his girlfriend.

When deputies arrived, they found him behind the house, and Wright was found dead inside, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

The autopsy by a medical examiner with the GBI determined that Ms. Wright suffered from strangulation.

Ramoutar confessed to law enforcement more than two years later, in the middle of his murder trial. He had been charged with malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault

It’s still not clear why Ramoutar killed Wright.

“That’s still what I’m waiting on. I have no answers,” Melinda Wright, mother of Alyssa Wright, told 11Alive back in Dec. 2016.

After accepting the guilty plea, Superior Court Judge Samuel Ozburn sentenced Ramoutar to life in prison.
