ROME, Ga. -- Saturday morning, police arrested an 18-year-old Rome man after they said footprints in the snow led from the scene of a burglary at a machine shop to the suspect's apartment.
Rome Police were called out to Carter Machinery in the 500 block of North 5th Avenue Saturday morning on a burglary call. When they arrived, they discovered that someone had broken a garage door window and propped it open. Gun and machinery parts were missing from the business.
Footprints in the snow that had fallen overnight Friday led to a nearby apartment building.
Officers knocked on the door and began to talk with the man who would later prove to be their suspect, Trevon Lee Cornell. As officers spoke with Cornell, one of them noticed a machinery part on the floor next to a desk. Sticking out from under the couch was a part from an AR-15 rifle. According to the police report, both items matched the description of items missing from the machine shop.
Cornell told officers that his roommates brought the items to the apartment and told him to hide them. Officers obtained a search warrant and searched the apartment, discovering the remainder of the stolen items from the machine shop.
Police charged Cornell with burglary and theft by receiving. He remains in custody in the Floyd County Jail. The burglary remains under investigation.
