Police arrest 2 after gunfight near Athens store

Police on Friday said at least five vehicles were damaged by people firing at each other across a parking lot in Athens.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Two suspects have been arrested on aggravated assault and weapons charges in connection with a gunfight in the parking lot of a Goodwill store in Athens. Police said they are looking for at least two others.

Late Friday afternoon at about 5 p.m., Athens-Clarke County officers responded to a shots-fired call at the Goodwill parking lot in the 4000 block of Lexington Road. When they arrived, witnesses said they saw several people running from the scene carrying pistols with extended clips.

At least five vehicles in the parking lot had gunfire damage. Shell casings found in the parking lot indicated several people had been firing at each other across the parking lot. Officers said 14 shell casings were recovered. No injuries were reported in the incident.

While investigating the incident, officers discovered some of the suspects may have gone into the 205 building of the Oaks Apartments on Gaines School Road. During that portion of their investigation, officers made contact with five males. After a search warrant was issued for the apartment, three handguns were recovered. Officers arrested Damari Jones and Mortavius Crew, and charged them both with aggravated assault and gun charges.

Active warrants are out for two other individuals that the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's Safe Streets team is actively searching for. Police said the incident is related a string of recent shootings in Athens, that they believe to be gang-related.
