Clayton County Police say they are investigating drifters in airport tunnel

Multiple videos of drifting, drag racing taken over the weekend on I-285 near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were posted online.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Videos flooded social media over the weekend showing drifters and drag racers in the airport tunnel on Interstate 285 near Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The airport tunnel on I-285 crosses underneath Hartsfield-Jackson's active fifth runway on the south side of the airport. Interstate traffic runs in both directions underneath the runway.

On at least one instance, all six lanes in one direction of the interstate were allegedly blocked by cars engaging in the activity.

"The tunnel (that) the drifters were in is in Clayton County's jurisdiction," told 11Alive News on Wednesday afternoon. "We also would like to make it clear that the Clayton County Police Department has a no-tolerance stance on drift racing, the elevated potential for loss of life and serious injury, but most importantly the disrespect for the laws and the citizens of this County."

Traffic was stopped inside the I-285 airport tunnel on at least one occasion over the weekend as drifters and drag racers used the tunnel as their personal playground.

A number of individuals were arrested earlier this year after Atlanta Police received similar reports of individuals "laying drag" and drag racing in the area of Spring Street and Ponce De Leon Avenue near The Varsity Restaurant in December 2019.

At least one other similar incident was caught on video last April in a Costco parking lot off of Mount Zion Road in Morrow.

No injuries were reported in connection with this week's incident.
