Firefighters, Conyers police rescue alleged drug trafficker after botched escape

Sometimes escapes don't go as planned. This is one of those times.

CONYERS, Ga. -- An accused drug trafficker running from police soon found himself relying on them - and firefighters - to save his life.

The Conyers Police Department shared the story, on Friday, of Joe Hobson Jr. who was suspected of trafficking narcotics out of the Huntington Creek neighborhood. A Conyers detective ultimately spotted him during a traffic stop on I-20 but said that Hobson ran from the car.

What followed was a two hour manhunt complete with the establishment of a full law enforcement perimeter in the area of DiversiTech - the 1600 block of Dogwood Drive SW.

After 2 hours of searching, police spotted Hobson - or at least part of him.

"... Corporal Cook and Lieutenant Carson located Hobson's feet protruding from a cold, muddy drainage creek where he had buried himself and become stuck," the Conyers Police Department posted to Facebook.

That's where Rockdale Fire Rescue ended up living up to their name, pulling Hobson to safety.

"Rockdale Fire Rescue did a fantastic job safely extracting Hobson from an extremely dangerous predicament," the police department said in their post.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and was in a Rockdale County jail cell before the night was over.

He's now being held on charges connected to possession of 29 grams of cocaine, 7 grams of methamphetamine, 12 ounces of marijuana, oxycodine and liquid codine. He also had two handguns - one reported stolen out of Covington - and $4,000 in cash.
