Mom's body found near local river

A 27-year-old mother of two is found dead along the banks of a Newton County river. Now come the most concerning questions: How - and why?

COVINGTON, Ga. -- A 27-year-old mother of two has been found dead along the banks of a Newton County river.

Now, 11Alive is learning more about the investigation as authorities say the cause of her death remains a mystery.

Crime scene investigators are processing the area along the Yellow River as they look for answers. Kelly Marshall’s friends are looking for answers as well. What led to the death of the young woman?

“When we got the phone call, it was like you got to be kidding me,” friend Brandi Witiw said.

Her heartbroken friends said she was such an outgoing young lady who loved life.

“She’s one of a kind, that’s for sure,” another friend, Lauren Martin, said.

“I was at my house having a little get together with some friends and got a phone call saying Kelly was found dead and looked at each other and said no this isn’t real,” Witiw said.

Officers said they were called to the 200 block of Mount Tabor Road after a kayaker reported finding her body along the river. As crime scene investigators hunt for answers, family and friends are expressing the hurt and pain of their loss.

“Outgoing, very caring; she’ll give you the shirt off her back,” Martin said. “She was well-loved and great mother and a great person.”

This is just the preliminary investigation. An autopsy must be completed and that may not be done for a day or two.
