How to choose a gift card for Christmas and avoid getting scammed.

Christmas is getting closer. Are you scrambling to get the perfect Christmas gift? According to Wallethub, 40 percent of Americans are asking Santa for gift cards.

But how do you safe guard yourself and not to get ripped off? We talked to a leading gift card distributor, so you can protect yourself this Christmas season.

The five days leading up to Christmas are the biggest sales days for gift cards. Experts estimate over 28 billion in gift cards will be sold this year.

Scott Meyerhoff is COO and CFO of the Atlanta-based company InCOMM, the largest distributor of gift cards in the world. Scott has tips to protect yourself from scams this Christmas season.

  • Always look at the packaging and make sure there is no intrusion.
  • You would never buy a lotto card with the numbers already scratched off. The same goes for gift cards, make sure the gift card foil is not scratched off or tampered with.
  • Hidden fees? Read the gift card. If it has no fees it will say, “No Fees” on the packaging.
  • If there is an issue with the gift card, call the 1800 number on the card.
