Jones Co. schools increase security with cameras, resource officers

New security measures are being installed in Jones County Schools after recent school shootings around the U.S.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office and the Jones County School District are working together to make their schools safer.

"We have a resource officer that has recently been assigned to this high school, who is walking the halls, [and] we have locked gates that are at all three entrances of the school," said assistant superintendent Kevin Sterling.

Sterling said every Jones County school has at least one school resource officer and the high school has two.

"I think the fact that we have a resource officer walking the halls, creating a relationship with those students, is just as important to make them feel safe, so they can come in and learn in a comfortable learning environment," Sterling said.

One of the biggest safety upgrades at Jones County High are the security cameras that feed back to the sheriff's office.

Maj. Earl Humphries says the cameras cost about $8,000 and give them a closer look at what's going on.

The camera installed at Jones County High School feeds back in real time and Humphries says the system should be up and fully functioning by the end of April.

He says the purpose of the cameras are not to disrupt students' privacy, but to make the community feel safer.

"These security measures for the school system; we are doing them in conjunction with the school system and the community involved at large," Humphries said.

He says they are also starting to work with school bus drivers to make sure students are safe even before they step on school property.

Even though Jones County has heightened security, they are holding a summit on April 26 to discuss ideas on how they can make the entire community safer.
