GoFundMe established for crossing guard killed in Mableton

Family and friends have established a GoFundMe page to raise funds for funeral expenses for Edna Umeh, the crossing guard tragically killed on Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton last week.

A GoFundMe page has been established for the family of 64-year-old Edna Umeh, the crossing guard who was killed by a reckless driver on Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton last week.

Witnesses said a Ford Focus, driven by 38-year-old Lamonte Whitaker, was speeding and weaving through the school zone in front of Lindley Middle School, where Umeh had stopped traffic to allow students to cross the roadway.

Cobb Police said Whitaker was headed westbound on Veterans Memorial Highway in the active marked school zone in front of Lindley Middle School. Investigators said Whitaker swerved into the center turn lane and around slowed or stopped traffic to continue westward, and struck Umeh as she was at her post in the school zone. They anticipate filing charges against Whitaker in the case.
