Hundreds expected for Pinecrest Academy’s 5K

This Saturday will be Pinecrest Academy’s inaugural 5K, a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race.

CUMMING, Ga. — Volunteers at Pinecrest Academy have resorted to some unconventional techniques to spread the word about the school’s first 5K race and fun run, and their efforts appear to be working.

“We have doubled our numbers from what we were expecting originally,” Melisa Smith said.

They expected around 200 participants, but as of Friday (24 hours before the race), more than 530 people had signed up. Part of the success could be attributed to Smith and her friend Stacey Persichetti, both volunteers at the school, who have been running around campus wearing giant shoe costumes.

“At one of the meetings, we were talking about a way to boost the enthusiasm for the students,” Persichetti said. “One of the ideas proposed was ‘why don't we have shoes come and visit the lunches and get the kids excited? And whoever is registered for the race will get a bracelet.’ Whenever they see the shoes on campus they can come up to the shoes and get a reward. So far it's been a huge hit.”

Registration runs through Saturday, February 23rd at 7:45 A.M. The race starts at 8 A.M.
