People upset with interchange construction causing traffic along Gray Highway

People around Gray Highway say interchange construction is causing traffic to get worse and they're asking GDOT for help.

If you have driven down Gray Highway in the last few months, you have most likely noticed construction going on as a part of the I-16 and I-75 interchange project.

Bob Harden says hopping in the car to run an errand is a process that used to be fairly simple, but in recent months, he says it means sitting in traffic.

“Regardless of where I’m going in town, I’ll add an extra 10 to 15 minutes just to get from Nottingham onto Gray Highway,” said Harden.

Harden lives off of Gray Highway in the Shirley Hills neighborhood.

It's an area he says has been a traffic nightmare since the Georgia Department of Transportation began construction on the I-75 and I-16 interchange.

“Instead of stopping at the far side of the intersection, where I think there is a sign that says ‘Don’t block the intersection,’ folks continue to fill the intersection until its solid and now nobody can move out of the side streets until it clears,” said Harden.

To help with the congestion, Harden says he would like to see some traffic calming measures put in place.

Bibb County Traffic Engineer, Nigel Floyd, agrees.

“We're looking at maybe putting some signs up that say do not block the intersection, so it can be easier for the side streets to come out on Gray Highway,” said Floyd.

With GDOT heading the project, Floyd says they are going to work with the department to find solutions.

“This project is taking place within the next three, maybe four years. There will be a lot of congestion out here, so there will be a lot discomfort for some people for a long time,” said Floyd.

But in the meantime, Harden thinks drivers should have a little more courtesy and common sense.

“If you know you can’t get through the intersection, you should stop before entering the intersection,” said Harden.
