Special Olympics champ heads to state

Sophomore Nate Johnson is the first from Bleckley County to head to the state championship in Atlanta for the Special Olympics!

DomiNATE: A motto that rang out across Bleckley County's track for the Special Olympics, all for Nate Johnson, a sophomore in the Special Ed program at Bleckley County High, but a sophomore who doesn't let his disability slow him down.

Running the 100 meter dash in 12.8 seconds.

Nor let him stop soaring. Johnson, completed the running long jump with a distance of 14 feet.

After an exhausting meet, Johnson was short of breath and short of words, but happy with his performance.

Chelsea Tyner is Johnson's teacher, and says she's so proud of how far he's come.

"When we first started, we were at like sixteen, nineteen seconds, and now we are at twelve seconds," Tyner said.

And proud to have Johnson as someone younger competitors can look up to.

"Everyone was just over there watching him, he's gonna be a great role model for the future, so he's got two years to stand out and make a difference,"Tyner said.

Soon, Johnson will get the chance to stand out at states!

"We're pretty proud of Nate 'the Great' Johnson," was said over the loud speaker at the track, as a medal was placed around Johnson's neck.

Now, he hopes to domiNATE for all his friends and family back in Bleckley County at the state meet in Atlanta on May 18.

Wishing you the best of luck!
