Police: SWAT standoff in DeKalb County ends after suspect shoots himself

Officers are waiting to obtain a search warrant to get inside.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police say an hours-long SWAT situation ended after the suspect they were trying to negotiate out of a DeKalb County home shot himself.

DeKalb Police and SWAT officers had been on the scene since about 6 p.m. after the man barricaded himself inside a home in the 600 block of Valley Brook Road.

Police said the ordeal began as a physical argument between a 21-year-old man and his roommate. The roommate was able to escape and called 911 around 5:45 p.m.

Authorities said no one else was in the house with the 21-year-old, and officers tried to talk to him for hours.

"Right now, it's just a matter of trying to come out safely without him harming himself or anyone else," said DeKalb County spokeswoman Shiera Campbell.

That goal, ultimately, wasn't successful. Police said the suspect shot himself in the chest, and was taken to the hospital.

Officers had Valley Brook Road closed, and business and homeowners who lived in that area were evacuated from their homes. Anyone else was asked to shelter in place.
