Pedestrian dies after attempting to cross 5-lane highway in Fairburn

Police said the accident happened after sunset and believe the victim wasn't in a crosswalk.

FAIRBURN, Ga. -- Police don't expect to file charges after a fatal accident that left a pedestrian dead in Fairburn, Georgia, Thursday night.

Police Chief Anthony Bazydlo told 11Alive that the accident happened around 8:30 p.m. in the area of U.S. Highway 29 and Beverly Engram Parkway. He said the victim was trying to cross Highway 29 - a five-lane roadway - outside of a crosswalk after dark.

Chief Bazydlo was unsure of the weather conditions at the time but that the driver involved remained on the scene and was cooperative with their investigation.

Police are still investigating the accident and attempting to notify the victim's family. Bazydlo said the Fulton County Medical Examiner will be responsible for releasing the person's name.
