Victim identified in fatal shooting at Clayton County motel

Responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

JONESBORO, Ga. — Police have identified the gunman they say killed a man outside a Clayton County motel Friday night.

Clayton County Police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury says officers went to The Woods Motel in the 7800 block of Main Street around 8 p.m. March 23 after getting reports of a possible fight and a shooting.

When officers got there, they found 34-year-old Mario Molden of Jonesboro shot at least once. Responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

During the initial moments of the investigation, officers were told a woman may have shot the Molden. However, surveillance cameras from a nearby location caught the shooting on video and revealed that the gunman was actually a man, who was still at the scene.

Officers were quickly able to identify him as 50-year-old Lorenzo Gordon of Jonesboro and take him into custody.

While officers were still on scene investigation, they were alerted to an accident that happened a short distance away. That's where a woman, who identified herself as the victim's family member, crashed into a pole. Authorities said neither she nor anyone else was injured.

Police have charged Gordon with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
