Recount coming in Atlanta City Council race

Bond finished 375 votes ahead of English.

Courtney English, who attempted to unseat incumbent Atlanta city councilman Michael Julian Bond on Nov. 7, has requested a recount.

According to Fulton County spokesperson April Majors, the recount will take place on Friday, Nov. 17.

A total of 82,065 votes were officially cast and counted in Post 1 At Large race in Fulton and DeKalb counties. Bond finished with 41,220 votes, compared to English’s 40,845, a margin of 375 votes.

Georgia law governing elections says that when the difference in the number of votes between candidates is less than 1 percent of the total votes cast, a recount can be requested by the losing candidates.

"It's important in a democracy to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice is heard, to make sure that the process is fair and ultimately accurate," English said.

Bond said, "This is part of the process that every person is entitled to."

English carried DeKalb County with 4,735 votes compared to Bond's 3,642. In Fulton, Bond finished with 37,578 votes to English's 36,110.

In Fulton, 378 write-in votes were cast, but the county said those votes will not be included in the recount because they were not certified. In DeKalb, 44 write-in ballots were cast, but none of those votes were cast for Bond or English.
