Gwinnett's first Latino mayor invited to meet with President Trump

Rey Martinez will be one of just 75 mayors invited to the event

A metro Atlanta mayor received a call from the White House this week.

Loganville's mayor was hand-selected to attend an event at the nation's capital and meet with President Donald Trump.

Rey Martinez is the first Latino to be elected as a mayor in Gwinnett County. He said being invited to the White House is something that is honorable and he considers himself a supporter of President Donald Trump.

He also said that this will be the first time he will meet the president in a small group setting and that he was excited when he received a call for the upcoming "Mayors' Day" event.

"I went to a couple of his rallies back in 2016 but nothing personally," Martinez said. "I have met Mike Pence, his vice president. I've not met Donald Trump yet but I'm looking forward to it."

He'll be one of only 75 mayors at the event which will discuss issues at the city level. It's an opportunity he described as surreal because he's been a Trump supporter throughout the presidential campaign and now services as the chairing member of the group Hispanics for Trump.

The Loganville mayor said he'll bring up issues that affect Loganville in the meeting as well as hopes of developing the downtown area and bringing more jobs to his city.
