French ice dancer who suffered wardrobe malfunction leaves with silver medal

If only her costume had stayed on, they may have had enough points to win gold.

That's how you rebound.

It was close, but the French pair of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron came up less than one point shy of winning gold and had to settle for silver in the ice dancing finals in PyeongChang.

But considering what happened the night before, it should feel gratifying.

The pair experienced an awful wardrobe malfunction during their performance the night before. Cizeron brushed up against the back of Papadakis' costume, and it came apart around the neck. Unfortunately, her breast was exposed during the performance. The incident was also replayed.

Papadakis had tears streaming down her face as the couple left the ice on Sunday.

“It is just frustrating to miss a few points because of a costume issue,” Cizeron said after the short dance. “It is not what we get ready for when we train. I am still proud that we managed to pull out a program like that even with a difficulty like this."

Papadakis and her partner received 81.93 points on Sunday, putting them in second place heading into the free skate. They received 123.35 points for their free skate on Monday and finished with 205.28 points.

Their free dance score was the highest in history. They took the lead, knocking the American pair of Alex and Maia Shibutani to third place.

But the Canadian pair of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir followed. The team that always seems to be flawless did enough to finish with 206.07 points, 0.79 points better than the French pair.

It may leave some lingering 'What-If's' for Papadakis and Cizeron. Did the wardrobe malfunction cost them the 0.80 points they needed for gold? It's likely. She tried so admirably to execute the skate and maintain its artestry while maneuvering so her whole top wouldn't fall down. However, many believed the judges were generous enough on Sunday after witnessing the technical issues to keep them in the running.

It's also hard to take anything away from Virtue and Moir. The Canadian pair skated so beautifully and technically perfect. Monday was their second Olympic gold medal in ice dancing. They also won a silver in Sochi.

It's the beginning of the road for Papadakis and Cizeron. They should be back.

Hopefully next time they'll have a better costume designer.
