The Home Depot Foundation teams up with Girl Scouts to bring more women into construction

The Home Depot Foundation is launching a new program in Atlanta to give young women the skills they need to be successful in the construction industry.

ATLANTA — A new program coming to Atlanta wants to bring more women to the construction workforce.

The Home Depot Foundation announced that it is partnering with The Girl Scouts of the USA. Atlanta joins Houston and Denver as one of three cities to pilot this new program.

Here's how it works: Local troops will receive hands-on experience in building, carpentry and other skilled trades, according to Heather Prill, the senior manager of National Partnerships at The Home Depot Foundation.

She said this partnership hopes to encourage and prepare young women for a successful career in the construction industry.

"We don't see enough women in skilled trades," Prill said. "The Girl Scouts is the perfect opportunity for us to work with young women, showcase the trades and get them excited about it."

Prill is right. There are not a ton of women in the trade industry. The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds 11 percent of construction workers and 27 percent of architecture and engineer professionals are women.

"The statistics undoubtedly underline the imbalance of talent and roles held by women within the construction trade industry," said Shannon Gerber, The Home Depot Foundation's executive director.

And now, Girl Scouts in Atlanta will soon be able to participate in women-led trade workshops. Troops will also get professional career advice and education from females in the industry.

"Not only are we creating next generation of skilled tradespeople, we are creating the leaders of the next generation of the skilled trades," Prill said. "What better way than to work with the Girl Scouts who help create young female leaders."

The training program is expected to launch in September or October. If you are interested in getting your Girl Scout signed up, Prill said to contact your local troop.
