CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A fire that began inside the engine compartment of a car in Cherokee County was knocked down before causing significant damage to a local auto repair shop on Saturday.

Cherokee County firefighters said they were called to Richard's Automotive Repair at 2965 Lower Union Hill Road in the Hickory Flat area around 6:30 p.m. They had been alerted to the area by a caller who said they saw black smoke coming from the top of the building and through its doors.

Through the teamwork of numerous fire units, the fire was knocked down within minutes of their arrival. Fire investigator Cheri Collett has since reported that the fire began in the engine compartment of a vehicle inside the shop's nine-bay garage.

"Extensive fire damage was observed in the engine and passenger compartment of this vehicle," Collett said. "There is moderate smoke damage within the interior of the garage.”
