Funeral arrangements announced for Coweta deputy killed by 17-year-old relative

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m., followed by a procession to Palmetto, Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A Coweta County deputy will be laid to rest this week.

Twenty-five-year-old Edmond Irvin was shot and killed April 30 after getting into a fight with a 17-year-old cousin, authorities said. 

According to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, Irvin's funeral will be held at the Saint Smyrna Baptist Church at 68 Heery Rd. in Newnan. A private viewing for law enforcement only will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; a public viewing will follow from 12 to 6 p.m..

According to a GoFundMe launched by employees of the sheriff's office to help the family, Irvin leaves behind a fiancée who is five months pregnant with the couple's son. The baby is expected to arrive in September. 

It was around 9:40 p.m. April 30 when officers responded to a home on Snow Fall Terrace at Alpine Way in Palmetto, Georgia and found Irvin dead, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Irvin was not on duty at the time.

Police said 17-year-old David Long got into a physical fight with the deputy that ended when Long shot Irvin with a handgun and fled the scene.

Family members in the home heard the shots and saw Long run from the residence. Authorities caught up with the teen a few miles away near exit 56, right off I-85.

Long, who is being held in the Fayette County Jail, has been charged with one count of murder and one count of terroristic threats. The GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting and then will hand it over to the Coweta County district attorney for prosecution.
