Sole suvivor of crash that killed 3 teens showing signs of improvement

The 17-year-old is showing signs of progress, sources said.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The 17-year-old survivor of a crash that claimed the lives of three of his friends has been moved out of an intensive care unit.

Meadowcreek High School senior Messiah Allen has been hospitalized at Gwinnett Medical Center since the accident Friday night.

According to Gwinnett County Police, Allen was one of three passengers in a Toyota 4-runner driven by 18-year-old Brandon Martinez. The teens were leaving a high school football game when police said Martinez swerved to avoid a collision, struck a guardrail, went down an embankment and struck a tree.

Martinez, 18-year-old Nelson Umanzor and 16-year-old Naseer Alwakeel were killed.

Allen was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Sources told 11Alive's Deborah Tuff that Allen has been showing progress. He was moved out of the ICU on Tuesday and into physical therapy. Using a walker, Allen has reportedly put weight on a leg that had a rod placed in it. He has also begun talking.

Nurses said Allen still faces a long road to recovery.

Allen may still require surgery on his nose, and an MRI will be performed later in the week to see if he suffered any brain damage, the source said.

His father, Alexander Allen, told 11Alive that he recently lost his job. He said he had no insurance and no way of paying for his son's medical expenses.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help generate funds to pay for Allen's expenses.
