ATLANTA -- J.R. Lemon's path to prime time was a winding one. He's proud to call Atlanta home; he grew up here playing football. After graduating with a degree in management science and engineering from Stanford University, he was signed on as a running back for the Oakland Raiders.

When he was released from the team, he planned on continuing his training and getting back into the game. Instead, he got into the entertainment game. After numerous commercial and supporting roles, he landed a major role in NBC's Night Shift.

In an interview with 11Alive's Vinnie Politan, Lemon said his role as nurse Kenny gave him a new level of appreciation for nurses. "It's a selfless job," he said. "As a nurse, you're always giving, and you don't always get the credit. You're always extending yourself and trying to do more for the patient and the doctor."

When asked if he'd "gone Hollywood", Lemon laughed. "Oh, no! Even when I was in Atlanta, I was the guy who had my white Reeboks and my Nautica. Some people here know what I'm talking about!"

NBC launched the first season of Night Shift over the summer. The second season starts Monday, February 23 at 10:00 on 11Alive.
