'She is part of me' | Grandmother proves family comes first after adopting granddaughter

This 75-year-old grandmother opened her heart and home to her grandchild.

SAN ANTONIO — It's never short of amazing how people answer the call when it comes to family, and Lupe Torres is the shining example of that.

She's a 75-year-old grandmother who just adopted one of her grandchildren, her second adoption in a forty year span!

"I never thought I would have another school-aged child in my home," she said. "When she brings in her homework I have to really concentrate because it's longer two plus two or three plus three, you know, it's all triangles and patterns," she continued. 'I'm learning and I'm in school again."

Torres is not only a grandmother, she's a great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother. Torres has taken on lots at her age, but family always comes first.

Torres didn't hesitate to adopt her granddaughter, 8-year-old Jordynn.

"She's asked me before should she call me mom or grandma, and I told her whatever makes her feel better," Torres said. "There are times when she will say 'mother' and there are times when she says 'grandma', but I answer to both."

Torres understands what she's taken on at her age, but knows she's willing and ready to do whatever needs to be done.

"Just seeing her be a little girl, and to play with little girls her own age brings me such joy," Torres said. "It brings me joy that I am able to bring some happiness into her life."

Torres hopes that God gives her the health to see her granddaughter celebrate her quinceañera and then turn eighteen years old.

"It is very important that she is brought up in a healthy home with a safe environment. She is able to know that this is her home. At first she would say we are going to grandma's house, but now she says that we are going home," Torres said.

Torres said she has no regrets and said that if she had to do it again, she would. Torres joked that Jordynn keeps her young.

"It feels so good that she is part of me now. She is part of us, my family now, and that's very special to me. I can feel her love for us."
