90-year-old school bus driver in Virginia retires after 50 years

Robert Dillard comes from a large family and says his love for kids kept him in the driver's seat for so long.

AXTON, Va. — After decades of work and service, a bus driver in Virginia is getting a well deserved retirement -- and that is getting us uplifted.

Robert Dillard has been a bus driver in Henry County, Virginia since 1974. After 50 years of driving, the 90-year-old is handing in his keys Wednesday.

Dillard takes students to and from Axton Elementary School in southern Virginia. He even wakes up at 6 a.m. every day to make sure the bus is warm for students.

Dillard comes from a large family and says his love for kids kept him in the driver's seat for so long.

"I said I would give it up you know I said 90 years. That's enough," Dillard said. "To be fooling with a school bus you know but god blessed me real good."

While Dillard won't be driving a school bus anymore, he says he plans to still visit the school from time to time to check in on the kids.
