Metro Atlanta program searching for 150 reading, and math tutors

The initiative from Ampact and AmeriCorps aims to create opportunities for students and individuals looking to transition into education.

ATLANTA — A program dedicated to bringing reading and math tutors into the classroom is expanding its reach, looking for over 100 employees.

The initiative from Ampact and AmeriCorps aims to create opportunities for students and individuals looking to transition into education.

"The kids know we are there for them personally," Christian Kauth, a tutor with Georgia's Reading and Math Corp, said, "it's more of a one-on-one, or they work in pairs, rather than a full classroom setting with so many students."

The program's reach extends to students in 11 counties and four charter schools across Georgia. One-on-one support has proven highly effective, enabling students to make more than a year's progress during the school year.

"We had some tremendous growth in our third grade," Principal Arthur Davis at Campbell Elementary said, adding later, "every teacher, every administrator would want to have additional support. So it's not a negative thing to just help supplement what we need to do in the classroom."

Reading Corp and Math Corp plan to expand their work and hire 150 more tutors.

"We take ordinary people and make them extraordinary tutors." Tiffany Johnson, a tutor trainer, emphasized that the program has a comprehensive training process, which equips even those without teaching experience.

"We do one-on-one sessions," she said. "We go over scripts; we go over lesson plans; we go for where to begin."

Tutors have the flexibility to work full-time or part-time hours. In return, they receive various benefits, including a monthly two-thousand-dollar stipend, a Pell Grant for tuition or student loans, health insurance and even childcare assistance.

"As long as you have a high school diploma and an interest in becoming a leader, we provide full training and support to those tutors," Dr. Shawonna Coleman, Director of Ampact/AmeriCorps, highlighted the program's inclusivity, saying,

Recruitment for tutors occurs throughout the year, with a cohort starting this upcoming Monday and another set to begin on January 15 for the school year.
