Initially, police said James Jake Ponder and a friend gave two people a ride near Troup Street and the people who got into the car attempted to rob Ponder. One of the suspects, police said, shot Ponder. The suspects jumped out and ran from the scene. Police said the friend who was in the car and witnessed the shooting managed to drive Ponder to the emergency room at WellStar. He later died

The investigation later revealed that Ponder had previously communicated with the two people in order to arrange the purchase of a firearm. He drove to Troup Street to meet them to make the purchase, but the suspects attempted to rob him and shot Ponder instead.

Anyone who has information that could help officers find McFarland is asked to contact police.
