Dash cam shows north Georgia chase, PIT maneuver

Preliminary investigation suggests two pretty glaring reasons the driver likely decided not to stop for the deputies

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — A wanted man's attempts to escape Tuesday didn't get very far after deputies ran his tag, gave chase and eventually forced his truck off the road.

The incident happened in Pickens County just before 3 p.m. when deputies checked a tag and found that the driver, Joseph David Haynes, had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.

That was likely one reason he refused to stop when the blue lights came on behind him.  Haynes, the alleged driver, is seen on dash camera video trying to escape deputies - sometimes swerving around other drivers and cutting through intersections. But the attempt comes to the end after a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver where deputies quickly surrounded him with guns drawn.

The video shows the truck lurch forward and a deputy quickly pull the driver out of the open door.

Investigators soon find the other reason he may have been trying to escape: both he and his passenger Larry Kevin Davis were found in possession of methamphetamine.

In addition to his felony probation warrant, Haynes was arrested and charged with failure to maintain lane, a stop sign violation, a red light violation, driving while unlicensed, fleeing and attempting to elude reckless driving and possession of methamphetamine. Unattributed - but somewhat self-explanatory - was another charge of having an open container.

Davis, the passenger, was charged with possession of methamphetamine as well.
