A DeKalb County police officer and a woman are in stable condition after they were shot during a domestic incident involving an armed man early Sunday.
It happened at an apartment in the 3900 block of Fire Oak Drive shortly after 3:30 a.m.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers responded to a domestic incident between a man and a woman. It was believed that the man was holding the woman hostage.
According to DeKalb County Police Chief James Conroy, when officers arrived, they heard a gunshot from inside the apartment. The man inside the apartment came to the door holding a gun to the woman's head before going back inside.
After hearing additional gunshots from inside, the responding officers called for backup and began to evacuate adjacent and nearby apartments. When they entered the apartment, they discovered that the woman had been shot and began searching for the man.
During the search, one officer fired his weapon and another officer was hit by gunfire.
According to investigators with the GBI, an officer in a nearby driveway was adjusting equipment when his shotgun discharged. The round struck the ground and ricocheted into an officer, resulting in that officer's injuries.
Conroy said the wounded officer and the woman were each transported to a nearby hospital. According to the GBI, the woman was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon. The officer was treated for his injuries and released.
SWAT officers arrested the man inside the apartment without further incident.
The investigation of the incident is still underway. DeKalb Police will handle any charges related to the man inside the apartment.
The GBI will also conduct an independent investigation.
