Gas station employee shot while trying to stop theft of wine

It happened after the victim saw the suspect steal a bottle of wine.

A man is in the hospital after he attempted to stop a wine theft early Friday morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. at the Exxon gas station off Joseph E Boone Boulevard.

Authorities said the victim saw the suspect take a bottle of wine as he was sweeping the lot. He confronted the suspect and got the bottle of wine back. That's when the suspect shot the employee -- striking him in his abdomen.

The victim was taken to Grady Hospital and was said to be in stable condition.

The suspect ran away. Authorities said he was wearing a black puffy jacket.
