DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An Atlanta man is convicted of murdering his friend over $35, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office.

A DeKalb County Superior Court Judge found 65-year-old Rickey Carter guilty on Monday on charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony stemming from the shooting death of Quinlan Parker, 48, on Jan. 28, 2022.

Carter was sentenced to life in prison plus five years.

DeKalb County Police Officers responded to a call about a person shot at an apartment on Maypop Lane in unincorporated Decatur in 2022. When they arrived, officers found Parker dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

When investigators interviewed Parker's wife, she said that shortly after her husband came home, Carter knocked on the door. They let the longtime friend inside. The two then began arguing about money Parker borrowed a few weeks earlier, a news release said.

Parker's stepdaughter then came into the room when she heard yelling and began to record the argument on her cell phone. Parker's wife said Carter pulled out a small, black handgun, and then she heard a gunshot. The district attorney's office said Carter claimed he shot Parker in self-defense, but the cell phone video contradicts that. The video showed Parker backing away from Carter before he opened fire.

Carter then left the house, and Parker's wife performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but he died.
