Monroe police looking for help from public after overnight homicide

Police said a party became violent around midnight, resulting in gunfire between partygoers.
The homicide took place along Tanglewood Drive.

MONROE, Ga. — Police in Monroe said they are working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on a homicide that occurred just after midnight Sunday.

According to Monroe Police Chief Keith Glass, a party on Tanglewood Drive in northeast Monroe became violent around midnight, resulting in gunfire between party-goers.

Investigators said 43-year-old Darrin Bernard Barnes of Duluth was killed as a result of the gunfire.

After days of searching for clues, police released an update in the investigation saying they recovered a firearm from the bottom of Lake Varner. At this time, they believe the weapon may be related to last week's incident, or a previous one.

"The recovery of this firearm could prove to be very instrumental in resolving one of or both the Barnes and Barfield homicides which occurred a couple of weeks ago in Tanglewood," Glass said.

Officials said the weapon would be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Labe for testing to confirm whether it was connected to either of the homicides.

Anyone with additional information that may help police is asked to call Detective C. Cannon at 678-357-1939.
