Police chief: Investigators searching for suspect in mall food court shooting

Police said they're still trying to establish how the incident unfolded.

CORRECTION: While the shooting is still considered accidental, the shooter is still being treated as a suspect since he left the scene of the shooting - and they're still looking for him.

MORROW, Ga. -- One person is in the hospital and another treated on the scene after a gunshot in a metro Atlanta mall. Now, they're trying to find the "irresponsible gunman" responsible.

The accidental shooting happened in the food court of the Southlake Mall in Morrow. Police initially believed the gun owner was standing up from eating when the gun fired from the waist area. They said the bullet ricocheted off the tile floor, fragmented and hit two people.

But less than an hour later, Morrow Police Chief James Callaway said while the shooting is still considered accidental, the gun owner may still be considered a suspect because he left the scene.

Callaway said they are still working to establish how the incident unfolded, but they said the person who was hospitalized was alert and conscious when taken from the scene. The other was treated by paramedics and released.

"This was an accidental discharge by an irresponsible gun owner that Morrow Police still want to talk to," police said on social media.

Morrow police investigators haven't listed charges the gun owner could face. They stressed, however, that this wasn't an "active shooter" situation.
