Robbery of McDonald's full of French special forces ends badly - for the robbers

Two men made the mistake of attempting to rob perhaps the most heavily defended McDonald's restaurant in existence, Sunday, and now they're paying the price.

A French National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) member presents the equipment on April 8, 2010 in Satory, west of Paris, during the inauguration of a new GIGN barrack by French interior minister Brice Hortefeux.

Two men made the mistake of attempting to rob perhaps the most heavily defended McDonald's restaurant in existence, Sunday, and now they're paying the price.

It likely looked like any other of the burger chains thousands of restaurants to the two robbers but, as NBC News reports, they would soon learn of one key difference at this specific one in France.

Sitting in the restaurant were 11 men from the Groupe d'intervention de le Gendarmerie nationale (GIGN).

NBC reports this is France's rough equivalent to the U.S. Navy SEALS or Army Special Operations Forces.

To avoid any potential issues in the crowded restaurant, the service members waited for the robbery to play out, then confronted the men outside.

The robbers refused to surrender and were fired upon by members of the elite military team.

One was shot in the stomach and the other was critically injured from a fall down a flight of stairs.
