Man killed during traffic stop after firing gun at officers, Gwinnett County Police say

Police said its crime suppression task force had been looking for a suspect wanted out of Hall County.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A traffic stop ended with deadly gunfire, killing a man whom Gwinnett County Police said fired shots at officers Thursday evening.

According to the department, the shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on Jimmy Carter Boulevard near the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The incident prompted the road to close as an investigation began.

Police said its crime suppression task force had been looking for a suspect, 39-year-old Steven Scott, wanted out of Hall and Gwinnett counties when officers spotted him at a Waffle House. Officers then initiated a traffic stop, and a red Jeep pulled over for a marked police car.

According to Gwinnett County Police, the officer gave verbal commands, but Scott allegedly did not obey. Instead, officers said the man floored the car.  At some point, the suspect allegedly started shooting at the officer, and gunfire hit the Waffle House at least one time.

In the same parking lot, police said they had a detective in an unmarked car -- a red passenger car -- which had its blue lights on. The suspect is accused of accelerating his car toward the unmarked car. Police said the suspect then fired at least one round toward the car, hitting it.

The bullet that hit the unmarked police vehicle hit the trunk and ended up traveling through the back seat into the driver seat where the officer was sitting.

The patrol car officer then began pursuing the suspect, police said. The officer followed the suspect onto Jimmy Carter Boulevard, where the suspect then made a left-hand turn. The suspect then lost control of his vehicle -- causing it to spin. As it was coming to a stop, the car was facing the officer's car.

As they were facing one another, that's when the suspect allegedly started firing at the officer. It is currently unknown how many times the man fired at the officer, police said. However, the officer then hit the suspect's car to stop it. Police then said the officer jumped out of the car and started firing at the suspect, police said. The officer fired multiple rounds, but it is currently unclear how many times the man was shot, police said.

When the shooting stopped, police said the officers pulled the suspect out of the car and began to render aid. However, he died from his injuries.

Scott was also wanted out of Hall County for armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and pointing a gun at another.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation regarding the circumstances.

This is Gwinnett County's second shooting involving an officer for the year.
