Person shot dead after pulling 'weapon' on Rome officer during chase: Police

Rome Police Department was called to 410 South Broad Street regarding an armed robbery around 11:11 a.m.

ROME, Ga. — A person is dead after being shot by police in Rome, according to authorities on Friday.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the Rome Police Department was called to the 400 block of South Broad Street regarding a reported armed robbery around 11 a.m.

When officers arrived, they said the person began running up the street. That's when an officer chased after them on foot. The police department said the suspect pulled a weapon on the officer, who then shot them.

Police said the person died.

11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene where police tape was blocking off the corner of South Broad Street near McGhee Street. Nearly two dozen evidence markers could be seen.

The GBI now has agents on the scene to lead the investigation, the Rome Police Department said. Meanwhile, the officer who fired the shots will be placed on administrative leave while the case is being investigated, according to officials.

“The Rome Police Department understands the value of every human life and will work diligently to maintain transparency throughout this investigation,” Rome Police Department Chief Denise Downer-McKinney said.

No other information, including the name of the person, was provided about the incident. It's unclear whether anything was taken in the reported robbery.

Google Maps information shows the area as several blocks of residences off the Etowah River near the Oostanaula River.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story reported that the person pulled a gun on the officer. However, authorities have only described the weapon as a "weapon." 11Alive is working to get clarity on what kind of weapon was used. This story will be updated when that information is available.
