ATLANTA — Family caregivers of those with Alzheimer's can access resources and the latest information on the disease at the Alzheimer's and Brain Health Conference Saturday.

The health conference is being held by the local senior health care provider, Senior 911, at no cost to family caregivers. Senior 911 provides families with dementia and Alzheimer's disease with certified caregivers. Lunch will also be provided during the conference.

The one-day conference will feature expert panelists on brain health and dementia-related illnesses. Dr. Antoine Trammell, an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine, is the keynote speaker.

Trammell's work focuses on understanding the factors contributing to higher incidences of dementia in Black communities, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

The event is meant to help caregivers who are watching the disease evolve in a loved one. The Alzheimer's Association reports, in Georgia, 343,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease. Several are underpaid or not paid at all.

"What this does is shine a light on the caregiving community," said Bill Gerdes, partner at Senior 911. "You know, 75% of the caregivers in the U.S. are not compensated, they're family members."

The senior health care provider also runs a nonprofit, Angel 911. The nonprofit provides financial assistance to families seeking placement for their diagnosed loved one and education over caregiving.
