ATLANTA — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the Trump administration has decided to push the income tax filing date to July 15 from April 15.
Mnuchin announced the decision in a tweet Friday saying that at President Donald Trump’s direction “we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.”
Emory Accounting Professor Usha Rackliffe says if you’re expecting a refund, you might not want to wait until July.
“A refund check is phenomenal because you get the money right quick, you have it to spend right when you need it the most,” Rackliffe said.
The IRS also announced Friday that all Taxpayer Assistance Centers will be temporarily closed.
Tax preparation company H&R Block will now only allow customers to drop off their tax forms.
No more person-to-person tax preparation.
“You can’t go meet with your tax planner. You can’t go meet with your CPA. So, this can present a lot of challenges,” said Rackliffe.
The administration announced earlier this week that it would delay the payments, a move that Mnuchin said would leave $300 billion in the economy at a critical time.
“That means there’s so much more liquidity in the market,” said Rackliffe, “so, individuals can use the money now. Corporations can use the money now. And that’s huge.”
