Family sets up online fundraiser for 4-year-old girl tragically killed in Mall of Georgia's parking lot

Abigail Hernandez, 4, along with her father and 7-year-old sister, were hit by a pickup truck while crossing a busy road at the Mall of Georgia on Sunday.

BUFORD, Ga. — Loved ones are mourning the loss of a 4-year-old girl who was tragically killed after being hit by a pickup truck in the Mall of Georgia parking lot Sunday afternoon.

Abigail Hernandez, 4, along with her sister and father, were crossing Mall of Georgia Drive in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods and Von Maur when authorities said an 18-year-old driver of a 2004 White Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was turning left and hit them.

Gwinnett Police said the 31-year-old father and the 7-year-old girl were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Abigail was taken to Scottish Rite, where police said she died due to her injuries.

An online fundraiser has been set up to help raise money for Abigail's family during this difficult time. The family wrote that this is every parent's "worst nightmare."

"Our sweet little Abby girl passed away. She fought her best to stay but ultimately God called her home. Unimaginable is the only word I have to describe this," the family wrote in the online fundraiser. "We thank you for your love and support during this time."

Gwinnett Police are now encouraging people to slow down.

"Take a look around because you're going to see a lot of families out and about as the weather's starting to get warmer, so just be mindful of all the pedestrians who are around," Gwinnett Police Sgt. Michele Pihera said at a press conference.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. So far, charges have not been filed against the driver involved.
