Alabama mall shooting suspect arrested in metro Atlanta

Erron Brown was captured in South Fulton.

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. -- A suspect wanted in connection with a mall shooting that happened on Thanksgiving in Hoover, Alabama has been arrested in metro Atlanta.

The suspect, Erron Martez Dequan Brown, 20, was arrested in South Fulton on Highwind Way Thursday.

U.S. Marshals arrested Brown without incident at a relative's home. Officials believe he came here after the shooting to hide out.

People living nearby didn't want their faces shown on camera, and said they didn't know anything about the suspected mall shooter next door.

"That was his relative, maybe the guy who lived next door knew or didn't know," one neighbor said. "I can't make a judgement on the situation that was going on because I just didn't know."

Alabama investigators have charged Brown with attempted murder, and additional charges might follow.

"The investigation is ongoing, including the officer-involved shooting from the same evening and location," the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency in a news release.

"It is highly likely that prematurely releasing information, including video evidence, would have hampered the investigation’s progress thus far, even to the point of deterring key witnesses," the news release said. "As other witnesses continue to come forward, it is imperative for the integrity of the investigation that SBI [State Bureau of Investigation] continue to keep confidential information Agents obtain. SBI continues to ask for the public’s and City of Hoover’s support by being patient, allowing the judicial process to proceed in the manner provided under our country’s and state’s system of justice."

In a Nov. 29 council meeting, however, Hoover city councilmember Derrick Murphy demanded Alabama law enforcement to release more information about the shooting.

"I'm making a request ... to allow the city of Hoover to release the limited information we have," Murphy said in a press conference on Thursday. "Mayor Frank Brocato, Chief Derzis and my fellow councilmembers are all in full support of this request."

According to South Fulton Police, Brown was taken to police headquarters for questioning and was later transported to Fulton County Jail.

A spokesperson for the jail said that an extradition hearing could happen Friday, and Brown is expected to be taken back to Alabama to face charges.
