City of Atlanta unveils new EMS center

Atlanta Fire Rescue Chief Roderick Smith also addressed concerns about the need for fire stations in the City of Atlanta.

ATLANTA — The City of Atlanta revealed its latest initiative in improving emergency medical services with the inauguration of a new EMS center. It's aimed at reducing 911 call wait times.

The unveiling comes as part of ongoing efforts to tackle concerns raised following the closure of multiple fire stations last year. The new facility, located on Campbellton Road, marks the city's first dedicated center for medical emergencies and is staffed with paramedics from Atlanta Fire Rescue.

Atlanta Fire Chief Roderick Smith emphasized that medical calls constitute the majority of emergencies handled by the department, underscoring the importance of such specialized facilities.

"For most of our calls, especially here in Atlanta, they are EMS-related," Smith said.

Residents have previously shared concerns about response times, particularly after the temporary closure of three fire stations last October due to staffing shortages and equipment issues.

"We've had concerns about response times, especially with the aging population in this area," Smith said.

However, he offered reassurance and announced forthcoming changes to bolster emergency services in the city. Notably, a replacement fire station, Station 36, is set to open, featuring state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce a new fire truck to the fleet; the delivery is expected within the coming week.

These developments offer hope to residents who anticipate quicker emergency responses in their neighborhoods.

In a bid to enhance sustainability, Smith also disclosed plans to introduce an electric vehicle to the Atlanta Fire Rescue fleet as part of a pilot program slated for later this year.

He said the unveiling of the new center is a  significant step forward in Atlanta's commitment to improving emergency response services, addressing concerns, and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
