Boil water advisory in effect for part of DeKalb County

Officials said about 15,000 customers are impacted

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management issued a boil water advisory for part of the county Friday as a precautionary measure.

Officials said about 15,000 customers are impacted.

The boil water advisory is in effect for the area surrounding Scott Boulevard on the north, Avondale Road through Old Rockbridge Road on the south, I-285 on the east and DeKalb County Industrial Way on the west. Check out the map below.

Residents in the area are being advised by officials to boil their water for at least one minute-- after reaching a rolling boil.

"Out of an abundance of caution, customers are advised to boil their water prior to use for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food," officials said in a release.

DeKalb Watershed said the boil water advisory is in effect until further notice.

The boil water advisory comes after a major water main break, which caused some residents to experience low to no water pressure in their homes.

The water main break prompted the City Schools of Decatur to close for the day. The DeKalb County School District also relocated five of its schools to other institutions.

"As service is restored, customers in the affected area may experience brown water and are encouraged to run the faucets inside and outside their homes/businesses to clear the internal plumbing," officials added in the release.

Additionally, officials said it will increase its normal testing of water samples in the area.
