Students, staff evacuated after reported gas leak at Atlanta elementary school

According to Atlanta Gas Light, leaking equipment caused the leak.

ATLANTA — Students were evacuated at an Atlanta elementary school after a gas leak was reported on Wednesday morning, according to school officials.

It's at Cascade Elementary School on Venetian Drive in southwest Atlanta. School officials said the gas leak was reported in the boiler room and that Atlanta Gas Light was on the way to fix it.

According to Atlanta Gas Light, leaking equipment caused the leak.

Students and staff reported smelling gas when they arrived at the school on Wednesday. They were kept outside, and anyone who entered was evacuated. All students were sent to West Manor Elementary until further notice.

After the leak was repaired, students and staff were bused back to the school and returned to the building for regular afternoon dismissal.

Grady Memorial Hospital responded to the scene, and officials noted that a school nurse felt lightheaded.

A spokesperson with Atlanta Public Schools later released the following statement:

As was reported this morning, the odor of gas was detected in the building at Cascade Elementary School as employees and students began to arrive. The building was evacuated immediately, and students and staff were relocated to West Manor Elementary School. The source of the leak was found, the system was repaired, and Atlanta Gas Light cleared the building for return. Students and staff were brought back to the building for regular afternoon dismissal and school will be in session as normal on Thursday.
