Cobb County residents woken up by 'explosion,' and power outages: Fire officials

The fire caught in the fenced area, causing a widespread power outage.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A substation in Cobb County caught fire in what residents around the area called an explosion; according to officials, the fire was extinguished.

It happened at the substation on County Services near Valor Drive, Cobb County Fire Department said around 12:30 a.m. The fire caught in the fenced area, causing a widespread power outage.

Officials said there was no danger to anyone's life. Firefighters waited until Cobb Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) arrived and surveyed the damage to protect them from any high-voltage pipelines or equipment.

Cobb EMC's outage map showed about 2,700 people still without power a little after 7 a.m. Thursday morning.
