A local police officer is in desperate need for help. And now, his community is coming together to stand by his side.

DeKalb County police officer Darrel Price says it all started when he noticed a lump in his right leg. After visiting a doctor in April, Price was diagnosed with Stage II Cancer (Hodgkin’s Lymphoma).

"You never know what to think or how your life is going to go,” Price said.

A fundraiser has been set up for him to help cover his medical expenses.

Price says this unexpected journey gives him hope after seeing his support system grow.

The nine-year veteran is an undercover officer, conducting most of his investigations in plain clothes. We interviewed him anonymously to protect his identity.

Price says the words "You have cancer" took him by surprise. He describes how difficult it was to put down his badge and start medical treatment.

"That was a strange thing. There’s no history of cancer in my family. And of course me being a police officer I run three times a week. I'm healthy,” he says.

Price tells 11Alive what makes his difficult journey bearable are the encouraging messages from the community. He’s received numerous ‘get well’ cards.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up for him.

Price, now on medical leave, has found heroes through this unexpected journey. He says he's fortunate the community can come to this rescue in a time of need.

"I'm proud to serve here. I am proud to live here. Proud of what they've done for me,” he said.

The fundraiser will be held Friday July 29 at the Dunkin Donuts located at 2555 Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur. The event is scheduled to last from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
